Introducing Donald Said and Maria Rosa Suites

I was tasked with writing the blogs for the website of Maria Rosa Suites, so it felt natural to begin by interviewing Donald Said, the mind behind this charming boutique bed and breakfast.

A Courtyard Encounter

Meeting Donald in the enchanting courtyard of Maria Rosa Suites was an experience in itself. Adorned with tables and colourful flowers, the courtyard features graceful arches that seem to have inspired the logo of Maria Rosa Suites. A small olive tree stands proudly in the middle, adding a touch of serenity to the scene. A gentle breeze bounced off the courtyard walls, a welcome respite from the heat of a July day in Gozo. Calm music played through the speakers, instantly putting me at ease. When I remarked on the soothing melodies, Donald mentioned that he handpicks each song, creating playlists to mellow guests and set the holiday mood.

 

Inspiration and Uniqueness

Donald took his seat, ready to share the story of Maria Rosa Suites. His eyes glowed with excitement as he began to speak, illustrating the journey and inspiration behind this boutique bed and breakfast in Victoria, Gozo.

When asked what inspired him to open Maria Rosa Suites and what makes it unique, Donald shared his heartfelt story. Opening Maria Rosa Suites was a long-held dream, fuelled by his love for hospitality and his deep connection to his hometown of Victoria. As a local and a long-time resident, he has always admired the unique charm and traditions of the area. He wanted to create a place where guests could feel the warmth and comfort of a home away from home while enjoying all that Victoria has to offer. With an eye for detail, Donald ensures that every guest feels special and leaves with a story to tell – a story about Gozo and its enchanting old town of Victoria.

 

The Historic Building

When I asked if he could tell me more about the history and significance of the building-turned-accommodation, Donald’s enthusiasm grew even more palpable. “Certainly!” he exclaimed. Maria Rosa Suites is located in Victoria, Gozo, a place steeped in history and cultural significance. The house itself is a traditional Gozitan stone building, reflecting the island’s architectural heritage. Built over a century ago, it has been carefully restored to maintain its original charm while offering modern amenities.

Exploring the Neighbourhood

“Our neighbourhood is a delightful mix of narrow, winding streets and open squares, bustling with local life,” Donald continued. “Staying at Maria Rosa Suites allows guests to easily explore the rich history and culture of Victoria. The central market, quaint shops, and a variety of dining options are just a short stroll away, providing a true taste of Gozitan life.”

Curious about what guests can expect in terms of experience and amenities, I asked Donald for more details. He explained that Maria Rosa Suites provides a memorable and comfortable stay. Guests can enjoy a locally sourced breakfast in the elegant main hall or the tranquil backyard where we were doing this interview. The rooms are fully air-conditioned with king and queen and twin size beds for a restful night’s sleep. Modern conveniences include high-speed Wi-Fi, full list of international TV channels, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers and double sinks, and daily maid service. A step free entrance and lift ensures accessibility for all guests.

Wanting to delve deeper, I asked how Maria Rosa Suites incorporates local culture and traditions into the guest experience. Donald enthusiastically shared that the property celebrates Gozo’s rich heritage in various ways. Firstly, this is a centuries-old building, built the traditional way using local methods from the beautiful local stone. One look at the façade and you will understand. Guests also enjoy a breakfast featuring traditional Gozitan and Maltese delicacies including local sourced jams, traditional pastizzi and qassatat, gozitan cheese, freshly baked Maltese bread and croissants. The suites are adorned with locally crafted furnishings and artwork, showcasing the island’s artistic traditions. Donald prides himself in giving personalized recommendations to his guests for exploring local sites and events. Additionally, the on-site library features books and materials about Gozo and Malta’s history, culture, and traditions, allowing guests to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the local heritage.

Experiencing Local Festas

Donald also mentioned the local festas, particularly the colourful celebrations of St. George’s in July and Santa Marija in August. These events, with their fireworks, band marches, and traditional food, provide an authentic taste of Gozitan culture and hospitality. What’s best is that all events associated with the two festas happen just a short walk away from Maria Rosa Suites, and sometimes also right at the Bed and Breakfast’s doorstep.

Authenticity

As the interview wrapped up, I made my way out of the yard and into the beautifully built corridor that greets people at Maria Rosa Suites with its graceful arches and traditional Maltese tiles. A couple happened to be checking out at the same time, explaining to Donald what a beautiful experience they had at Maria Rosa Suites, in Victoria, and in Gozo. The word “authentic” stood out for me when I overheard the couple talking to a gleaming Donald. Indeed, this is how I can describe the man: Donald is authentic, the place feels Gozitan, it feels authentic, the neighbourhood feels Gozitan, it feels authentic – this surely is the place to stay for an authentic experience of Victoria and Gozo.
