How many cities worldwide can boast having two opera theatres? Never mind having two opera theatres on the same road!
Victoria, Gozo, is home to two prestigious venues that have become pillars of the island’s rich cultural scene: Teatru Astra and Teatru tal-Opra Aurora. These theatres, each with its own story of resilience and artistic excellence, have placed Gozo on the map as a destination for opera lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike. With decades of opera performances, international collaborations, and community-driven passion, they continue to bring world-class productions to the heart of the island, solidifying Gozo’s position as a cultural hotspot.

First up, and the closest to Maria Rosa Suites (just 270 metres away!), Teatru Astra has been at the forefront of Gozo’s opera scene since its first operatic performance of Rigoletto in 1978. Over the years, it has staged some of the greatest works in operatic history, from Il Barbiere di Siviglia to La Traviata and Tosca, earning a reputation for its high-quality productions and artistic ambition.
Beyond its performances, the theatre plays a significant role in Gozo’s cultural events and has established itself as more than just a performance venue – it is a cultural hub that brings local and international talent together.
The theatre’s resilience is evident in its history. In 2003, a devastating fire destroyed much of its stage and orchestra pit. However, within just over a year, thanks to an unwavering community effort, the theatre was restored. The redesign, overseen by Oscar-nominated set designer Peter Howitt, injected new life into the space, reaffirming the theatre’s status as a centre of artistic excellence in Gozo.
As a non-profit organisation, Teatru Astra is entirely run by volunteers under the Socjetà Filarmonika La Stella. This dedication is what makes the theatre unique – locals and music lovers contribute their time and expertise, ensuring that each performance is delivered with passion and commitment. The theatre has also had the privilege of hosting internationally acclaimed artists, such as Joseph Calleja, Miriam Cauchi, Ghena Dimitrova, and Dimitra Theodossiou, solidifying its reputation on the Gozo opera festival stage.
In addition to opera, Teatru Astra is also renowned for its musical theatre productions, with an annual show staged every March. Following the success of productions such as The Sound of Music, Grease, Jesus Christ Superstar, and others, the next musical to be staged is Singing in the Rain (14, 15, 20, 21, 22 March 2026).

Teatru tal-Opra Aurora – A Grand Vision in Gozo’s Theatre Culture

Just a short walk from Teatru Astra, Teatru tal-Opra Aurora stands as a beacon of Gozo’s theatre culture. Established by the Leone Philharmonic Society in 1976, this theatre boasts the largest indoor seating capacity in Gozo, accommodating up to 1,600 spectators. The venue itself is an architectural masterpiece, featuring hand-painted works by renowned Maltese artist Emvin Cremona, whose ceiling design is inspired by traditional Gozitan lace.
Opera in Gozo truly flourished when Madama Butterfly graced Aurora’s stage in 1977, marking a turning point for Gozo’s performing arts scene. Since then, it has continued to stage world-class performances, featuring renowned conductors. Its stage has been home to some of the greatest voices in opera, including Eva Marton, Raina Kabaivanska, Michéle Crider, and Franco Farina, attracting audiences from across Europe and beyond.
Beyond opera, Aurora has expanded its influence to theatre, ballet, and live entertainment, with a diverse programme of events throughout the year, such as ‘War of the Worlds‘ happening on 22nd November 2025.
